Politics, magic, technology and pure human emotion fuel a quest for answers in this installment of the wildly popular Final Fantasy series. The hero of the story is Squall Leonhart, a somewhat troubled teen who is a student at the military academy known as Balamb Garden. As the game starts, the antisocial and introverted Squall is preparing to take the final steps to becoming a member of Garden's elite mercenary force called SeeD. During the required field exam, Squall's group (including his hated rival, the brash and arrogant Seifer Almasy) uncovers the beginnings of a plot by the nation of Galbadia, a global superpower with a tyrannical ruler. Squall and his comrades, Selphie Tilmitt and Zell Dincht, are SeeDs less than a day before being assigned to a mission in the Galbadian-occupied country of Timber. It is there that Squall meets Rinoa Heartilly, the young and passionate leader of a rebel faction. It is soon discovered that Galbadian President-for-Life Vinzer Deling has allied himself with the mysterious Sorceress Edea, and it falls to Squall and SeeD to stop them. Squall must overcome the pain of his past if he is to win the day--and Rinoa's heart.
Squall Leonhart is a cadet at Balamb Gardens, the West Point of the future. In his day-in-day-out life, the antisocial Squall must deal with regular adolescent angst, from his overbearing classmate Seifer, a sadist, to his instructor, the overly flirtatious femme fatale Quistis Trepe. Soon, though, Squall's days of teenage troubles end as he is flung into battle, being quickly promoted to a commanding officer to accomodate for lost soldiers as the peaceful city of Timber is invaded by forces of Galbadia, a military empire. The two dimensional plot is soon upped, however, as characters begin to develop along with the story - Squall's mysterious love Rinoa ends up as the former Timber princess, ousted from power and now a second rate terrorist; we delve into the lives of Zell, a loose cannon, and Selphie, a perky but deadly military cadet, both of whom are Squall's right-hand men. We also venture into the inner recesses of the themes of love and war as Squall and Rinoa get together, who is too engulfed in the war to care, and we get homefront and battleline views of all characters on both sides, and see what affects it has on all people.
