Small town bookstore owner Jamie Vaughn learns that hers and other struggling local businesses face closure by a powerful Portland property developer, led by architect and former flame Sawyer O'Dell. As Valentine's Day approaches and closure seems imminent, Jamie must not only hatch a heartfelt plan to save her beloved bookstore, but she must also sort out her past feelings for Sawyer.
Jamie Vaughn owns and operates True Love Bookstore and Café in the historic business district of Waterford, Oregon, it an establishment she's wanted to own since she was a child in it being a place that made her love books and reading. The store seems to be a magnet for true love as it is where many couples meet and fall in love, although Jamie's childhood friend Rick, an executive chef, is having trouble telling Jamie's friend and employee Lucy that he's loved her ever since she moved to town and started working in the café two years ago, he who was dating someone else at the time, but knew that there was a spark between the two of them upon that meeting which for her may now have passed in they having become friends in the meantime. The district itself isn't doing as well, with many businesses having pulled up stakes in the last few months, with city council contemplating a modern redevelopment, which not only means that it will lose its small town and historic charm, but that most of the existing business owners will not be able to survive the redevelopment. Coinciding with this news is the return to town of Sawyer O'Dell, Jamie's high school sweetheart, they who met in the bookstore when they were preteens. Despite professing their love for each other at the time, they broke up immediately after high school graduation as he moved away to go to college, he not having returned at all until now in focusing on work as a freelance architect which requires him to travel. Although knowing he is back in town, Jamie doesn't realize that the reason is because he is the architect hired by the Portland-based property development firm Ridley for the redevelopment, they having hired him partly because he used to live in Waterford, and thus knows the town and its citizens. A permanent job with the firm is on the line for him pending the affirmative vote by city council for the redevelopment. Jamie will do whatever it takes to fight the redevelopment, she finding a keepsake box by the store's previous owner, Harris Ogilvie, that he's labeled "Story of Us" which may provide her with the ammunition to block the redevelopment. While both Jamie and Sawyer can admit to themselves that there are still romantic sparks between the two of them, they getting back together may not be able to survive this professional battle, factored in with the return of Jamie's last serious boyfriend, Matt Van Horne, who she contemplated moving away with when he left for a job in Austin, Texas.
