A clumsy young man nurtures a plant and discovers that it's carnivorous, forcing him to kill to feed it.
When clumsy Seymour Krelborn spoils two of a client's flowers, his boss Gravis Mushnick is ready to fire him from his flower shop until Seymour says he has mixed two different breeds of plant at home to create the "Audrey Jr." hybrid. Mushnick agrees to give Seymour another chance, and the next day Seymour brings in Audrey Jr., which becomes Mushnick's pride and joy and draws interest from his other employee Audrey Fulquard and more and more of their clients. Suddenly the plant ails, and Seymour accidentally learns that she likes blood. Upset because he doesn't know how to feed her, he walks along the railroad track and throws a stone that accidentally hits the head of a man who falls on the track and a train runs over him. Seymour takes pieces of the body back to the shop and discovers that the plant likes human flesh. The next morning, Audrey Jr. has grown and become the attraction of the shop. But how will Seymour feed his plant again?
Bumbling florist Seymour is always being berated by his surly boss, Gravis Mushnick. To avoid being fired, Seymour brings into the shop a strange hybrid flower he has nurtured and named Audrey Jr. after his co-worker and crush. When Seymour tries to feed the plant, he discovers that it can talk and it lives off human flesh. Seymour reluctantly starts to kill people and bring their bodies back to the shop for Audrey Jr.'s lunch; as the plant continues to grow, it becomes the shop's main attraction. Mushnick soon becomes suspicious of what Seymour is feeding the plant. So do the local police.
Although he tries hard, mild-mannered, accident-prone Seymour Krelborn is in jeopardy of losing his job at Mushnick's Florist on Skid Row in Los Angeles for one mistake too many. Seymour is able to convince his boss, the store's owner Gravis Mushnick, to give him one more chance when the unique new plant he cultivated thrives at the store and brings in new customers. The prehistoric-looking plant, which he named Audrey Jr. after his coworker (and secret crush) Audrey Fulquard, sickens, then perks up when Seymour learns what it needs to grow: human blood, and lots and lots of it. Seymour stumbles onto a temporary solution when he accidentally kills a man. He must decide to go into the murder business to fulfill the needs of the plant that is making him famous and potentially wealthy in that fame. One factor in his decision is how Audrey Jr. affects his relationship with Audrey; Mushnick complicates matters when he learns what the plant thrives on; and the police are investigating a series of missing-person cases and suspect that the victims have been murdered.
Seymour Krelborn, a young florist-shop assistant, creates a carnivorous plant that feeds on human flesh and soon convinces him to start killing people. His boss is thrilled when the plant brings much more business to the shop, and his co-worker and crush is thrilled that he named the plant after her. But people start to wonder what nourishes the fantastic plant.
Classic black comedy about young schnook who develops a bloodthirsty plant and is forced to kill in order to feed it. The basis for the later hit stage musical.
